RED V-RAPTOR ST 8K VV is the most powerful and advanced RED cinema camera ever. As the brand’s new flagship system and sensor, as well as the first entrant into the new DSMC3 generation of cameras, V-RAPTOR stands alone at the forefront of the of digital image capture technology.
Featuring a groundbreaking multi-format 8K sensor- with the ability to shoot 8K Large Format or 6K S35, it unlocks the largest lens selection of any comparable camera on the market and allows shooters the ability to always deliver at over 4K. The sensor also boasts the highest recorded dynamic range of any RED camera and the fastest ever cinema quality scan time. With a dynamic range of over 17 stops and featuring scan times 2x faster than any previous RED camera, allowing users to capture up to 600 fps at 2K. V-RAPTOR will also continue to feature RED’s proprietary REDCODE RAW codec, allowing users to capture 16-bit RAW, and leverage RED’s latest IPP2 workflow and color management. Along with a new flagship sensor, the V-RAPTOR features a modernized platform in an amazingly compact package weighing in at barely over 4 lbs. With 2 4K 12G-SDI outputs, XLR audio and phantom power via adapter, and 1080p livestream, this system can handle most anything a shooter can throw at it.
Other ports include two 4K 12G-SDI outputs and an XLR audio interface with phantom power via adapter. There will also be wireless connectivity, which can transmit a 1080p live preview video over 2.4Ghz/5Ghz Wi-Fi for composing shots. An integrated 2.4” LCD display is used to navigate the menu and view the current settings and connections. The V-RAPTOR ST also works with Android and iOS devices via Wi-Fi or over USB-C. In addition to controlling the camera’s settings wirelessly, compatible mobile devices can also be used as a liveview display. The V-RAPTOR ST starts at $24,500 for the camera body only. A ‘Starter Pack,’ which includes the V-RAPTOR ST camera body, DSMC3 RED Touch 7” LCD display, a RED Pro CFExpress 660GB card and reader, two REDVOLT Micro-V batteries, a RED Compact Dual V-Lock charger, two V-RAPTOR Wing Grips and a RED EXT-to-Timecode cable (3’) is also available for $29.579.99.
Red also announced it will release an XL camera body in the first half of 2022 that will be ideally suited for studio configurations and high-end productions. The RED V-Raptor ST features a multi-format 8K sensor (40.96mm x 21.60mm) with the ability to shoot 8K large format or 6K Super 35. This in-camera option allows users to leverage any of large-format or S35 lenses with the push of a button and deliver at over 4K resolution. The new camera exceeds previous sensor capabilities, presenting users with the option to capture 8K full sensor at up to 120 fps (150 fps at 2.4:1), 6K at up to 160 fps (200 fps at 2.4:1) and 2K (2.4:1) at 600 fps while still capturing more than 17 stops of dynamic range. “V-Raptor reflects the ferocity of our team, who have spent the last two years forced apart,” says Jarred Land, president, Red Digital Cinema. “Through everything, we found a way to work together better than ever before, fueled by the incredible passion and support of our community of filmmakers. The V-Raptor harnesses Red’s proprietary RedCode Raw codec, allowing users to capture 16-bit raw and leveraging Red’s latest IPP2 workflow and color-management tools. The camera is built on a newly integrated, modernized form factor while featuring a robust professional I/O array that includes two 4K 12G-SDI outputs, XLR audio with phantom power capability via adapter, and built-in USB-C interface, allowing for remote control, ethernet offload and more. All features are packaged in a rugged design that measures 6″ x 4.25″ and weighs just over 4 pounds.
Other highlights include an RF lens mount with locking mechanism, wireless control and preview via Wi-Fi, phase detection autofocus, and a new integrated display (located on the side of the camera) that allows for comprehensive controls, including in-camera format selection, customized buttons and status updates.
The V-Raptor utilizes updated, streamlined RedCode Raw settings (HQ, MQ and LQ) to enhance the user experience with simplified format choices. Additional features include data rates up to 800 MB/s using Red-branded or other qualified CFexpress media cards, integrated micro v-mount battery plate, a 60mm fan for quieter and more stable heat management, and wireless connectivity via the free Red Control app, which is available for iOS and Android devices.
